Family Health and Wellness events

The Family Health and Wellness events will take place on June 11, 2022! This special day, which is held the second Saturday of June each year, promotes the importance of parks and recreation in keeping communities active and healthy.

Every park and recreation agency is encouraged to share ways to get families moving on June 11 – whether through virtual programs at home or in their local parks. Members of the healthcare and public health communities are also encouraged to participate, even as sponsors.

The logo and outreach toolkit for this year are now available! In addition to sample social media posts, press release templates for before and after your event, key research to highlight, and more, the toolkit can help you promote and celebrate Family Health & Fitness Day in your community. This guide will assist you in generating positive media coverage and support for your Family Health & Fitness Day activities and ultimately, the good work of your agency and the health and wellness benefits you provide to the community.

Introduction

It is a great idea to host a health and wellness fair at school to share information with students, staff, families, and the local community about healthy eating, physical activity, health services, and other wellness resources. Also, it’s a chance for you to build relationships with local businesses and community organizations, who may be able to support your school health initiatives in the future.

Taking action

Consider the following logistics before the fair:

  • Do you plan to have a theme such as Every Kid Healthy, Heart Health, Eating Better and Moving More, etc? Collect feedback from students, parents, and staff to determine the theme.
  • Set goals. What is your preferred number of community partners? What is the number of students? And how many family members?
  • Develop a timeline. Decide when you want to host the health and wellness fair and work backwards from there. You should begin planning at least two months in advance. Make sure the date and time are convenient for the whole family
  • Determine your budget. If any funds are available for purchasing food and incentives, how much is available? Seek donations and sponsorships from community organizations.
  • Set up and event day logistics including tables/chairs/electrical, a floor plan, wireless/internet requirements, etc. Inform partners and vendors of what equipment will be available.
  • Make in-person or phone calls to partners that align with your health and wellness theme. Clearly communicate the benefits of their participation to ensure their buy-in and support, and provide them with adequate notice.
